career transition

A career transition is a deliberate move from one role, industry, or way of working to another, whether it's prompted by a layoff, burnout, or simply deciding you want different work. In knowledge work it usually means three things happening at once: naming the skills that carry over without retraining, building fresh credibility in the new field through work you can show, and rewriting how you describe yourself so the move makes sense to clients or employers. The stretch from deciding to earning a stable income in the new path tends to run 6 to 18 months, shorter when the new field sits close to what you already do.
