Halyard: free WordPress FSE theme for community sailing education

A halyard is the line used to hoist a sail, one of the first pieces of vocabulary a beginner learns at the dock, long before words like “close-hauled” or “spinnaker.” Halyard the theme is built for the same kind of beginner-first project: the volunteer instructor, the parent whose kid just found free crewing, the community sailing commons translating an industry’s jargon for someone who has never stepped on a boat.

The signature layout is a dated periodical edition: a large condensed wordmark carrying the site’s name, a live dateline, a photo-and-listing section pairing a community photo with a dated calendar of regattas and scholarship deadlines, and a commons-board section for “crew wanted” classifieds, closing with a photo grid. It ships as a dedicated page template and as two drop-anywhere patterns, so a site opts into the layout on the page it chooses rather than having it imposed on the homepage by default.

Anton sets the bold, condensed wordmark and headlines, a register that reads as confident and unfussy rather than yacht-club formal. Archivo carries body copy, and IBM Plex Mono handles the dateline and listing figures. All three are self-hosted OFL fonts, chosen for a teaching-first register that never assumes the reader already knows the jargon.

Halyard carries the same CORE/SKIN architecture as every theme in this collection. The accessibility scaffolding, WooCommerce compatibility, and onboarding flow are shared infrastructure, while the condensed wordmark, the dated-edition layout, and the on-the-water calendar are entirely this theme’s own.

Closest sibling: Kerf for furniture rescue and cause-funded resale. Every theme in the collection is free and shares the same accessible core.
