A large language model is the kind of AI behind tools like ChatGPT. It was trained by reading an enormous amount of text and learning which words tend to follow which other words. When you ask it something it is not looking up an answer, it is predicting what a good answer would look like, one piece at a time. That is why it writes fluently on almost any subject, and also why it can produce a confident sentence that happens to be wrong. The practical consequence at work is that it is strongest where the answer is common knowledge and weakest where the answer is specific, recent, or rare.
