Most people who use PowerPoint regularly have never actually learned it. They’ve opened files, made changes, figured things out as they went. That works fine right up until it doesn’t. When someone needs a deck to look a specific way, or the presentation is tomorrow and the formatting keeps breaking, the guessing starts.
Mostly, it’s a foundation problem. No one showed them how the pieces fit together, so they never had a mental model for how the tool actually works.
That’s what this course fixes.
What the course covers
We start at the interface. If you’re not sure what the Ribbon is, where the slide panel lives, or what the difference is between a layout and a theme, that’s where we begin. Not because those things are complicated, but because they’re the ones that make everything else click. Getting the lay of the land first means a lot less time hunting later.
From there, we work through the core tasks in order: creating slides from scratch, working with text and images, applying layouts, using the Slide Master for consistent formatting across a deck, and running a presentation from start to finish. By the time the session ends, each person can:
- Create a clean, properly formatted presentation without starting from a template search
- Add and format text, images, and shapes without guessing
- Use the Slide Master to apply consistent formatting across an entire deck
- Set up and run a slideshow, including presenter view
- Save and share the file in the right format for the situation
That’s not everything PowerPoint can do. It’s the things you need to be able to do without stopping to guess.
Who this is for
This course is for people who have used PowerPoint but don’t feel grounded in it: the person who avoids it when they can and muddles through when they can’t. It fits office administrators who get handed presentation work, new employees who need to produce slide decks without any formal training, and teams where everyone is making presentations in slightly different ways and consistency is starting to matter.
Think of it like the photocopier in a shared office. Most people can get it to copy. But the person who knows the collate setting, the duplex option, and how to clear a paper jam without guessing is the one everyone else quietly relies on. A half-day of focused training does the same thing for a team’s PowerPoint skills: it turns a group of people who muddle through into a group that knows what they’re doing, and it means files can go back and forth without the results being unpredictable.
If you’re an individual who wants to get comfortable in PowerPoint before it becomes a regular part of your role, this course works for that too. Online delivery means you don’t need to be anywhere near the Niagara region to take it.
How training works
I deliver this training onsite for teams in the Niagara region and online for individuals and teams anywhere in Canada. Sessions are built around your version of PowerPoint, whether you’re running Microsoft 365 or a standalone install, and I adjust the pace to match the group. Most introductory sessions run a half-day.
Training is hands-on. You work in PowerPoint during the session, not just watch someone else do it. If you have a specific workflow in mind (presentations for clients, internal reports, event programs), let me know ahead of time and I’ll make sure we cover the pieces that matter most for your situation.
I also run introductory training in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook for teams that want to build skills across the full Office suite. The format is the same across all of them: start at the interface, build from there, and work through the tasks that come up most often.
To set up a session, get in touch and tell me a bit about your situation: how many people, what version of Office you’re running, and whether there’s anything specific you want the group to walk away knowing how to do.
