In typography, the gutter is the inner margin between two facing pages — the invisible space that lets the book lie flat, that keeps text from disappearing into the binding. In financial journalism, the gutter is the column of numbers: the figures that run down the side of a report, telling the story the prose confirms. Gutter is a WordPress FSE theme for financial publishers, data-driven news organizations, investment research distributors, and fintech content operations — built for the density and rigour of financial media.
Financial content has different structural demands than editorial content. Numbers need to be readable in tables, not buried in paragraphs. Pull quotes are more often data callouts than turns of phrase. Reports have footnotes and methodology sections. Articles cite sources in a way that demands more than a hyperlink. Disclaimers and disclosures need their own typographic treatment — present and legible, not buried in a 10-pixel footer. General-purpose themes do not know how to handle any of this. Gutter does.
The front page architecture is built for high-volume, high-frequency publishing. A headline ticker for breaking coverage. Section fronts for markets, analysis, and research. A data callout zone for the numbers that define the day. A river of recent content below. Every zone is a native block pattern — editable in the Site Editor, adjustable to the pace of your coverage, rebuilable for a different editorial focus without a developer.
The article template handles the full range of financial content types: the news brief, the data analysis, the long-form investigative piece, the research note, and the opinion column. Each template variant adjusts the editorial weight — sidebar prominence, footnote display, disclosure placement, related report links — to suit the content type without requiring different theme templates. It is the same architecture, tuned by the content editor, not the developer.
Gutter defaults to dark. Not dark as a style choice, but dark as a reading environment: the terminal, the financial dashboard, the investor checking overnight markets. The dark palette is purpose-designed for data density — background values that do not compete with the numbers, a colour accent that draws attention without distorting it. A light variant is included for publications that operate in daytime editorial environments or need parity with print layout.
Author credentials are treated as first-class content. Financial journalism lives or dies on trust, and trust is built in part by the visible experience of the person writing. Gutter’s author block includes credentials, disclosure affiliations, and a byline treatment sized for the weight the credential needs to carry. Not a 14-pixel italic line at the bottom of the article. A real introduction.
Gutter is part of the Colophon FSE Collection — 52 purpose-built WordPress themes sharing the same accessible, FSE-native foundation. WCAG 2.2 AA compliance in both dark and light modes, keyboard navigation, and self-hosted fonts. Built for the organizations that need their content to be trusted before it can be acted on.
What it does well
- Dark-first palette — purpose-designed for data density and low-ambient-light reading; light variant included for daytime editorial environments
- Data callout zone — a front-page section for the numbers that define the day: index values, rates, key figures; native block pattern
- Financial article template variants — news brief, analysis, research note, opinion column; each variant adjusts editorial weight without separate templates
- Footnote and disclosure handling — dedicated typographic treatment for methodology sections, source citations, and regulatory disclosures
- Credential-first author block — displays experience, affiliations, and disclosure relationships at the byline level where trust decisions are made
- Responsive data tables — financial data tables that hold structure on mobile without requiring a plugin
- Zero plugin dependencies — no page builder, no shortcodes; runs cleanly on any WordPress host
