WordPress.com Stats Smiley Remover · Hide the JetPack Tracking Glyph

For years, the WordPress.com Stats feature (later folded into Jetpack) dropped a tiny smiley face into your footer. It was the tracking pixel, made visible. Most people never noticed it. The ones who did could not find where to turn it off, because there was no setting. I wrote this to hide that one glyph without touching how the stats work.

What you get

  • Hides the WordPress.com Stats smiley with a targeted CSS rule
  • Your stats keep recording exactly as before. Nothing about the tracking changes.
  • No options page. Activate and the smiley is gone.

Who it’s for

Anyone still running the older WordPress.com Stats or the Jetpack stats module that shows the footer smiley. Fewer sites use this feature now than did when I wrote it, so check your footer first. If you do not see a smiley down there, you do not need this.

How to install

  1. Download the ZIP from GitHub.
  2. Go to Plugins, then Add New, then Upload Plugin.
  3. Select the ZIP and click Install Now.
  4. Activate.

Status note

This is an archived plugin. Originally published on WordPress.org, now maintained on GitHub (opens in new tab) and reviewed for security. Still works on current WordPress. No new features planned.
