This is one of two talks I gave that fall making the same underlying case from different angles: doing meaningful work for free, in public, can build more consulting business than doing the same work for money in private. The Toronto version, delivered at WordCamp Toronto’s Developers Track, built the argument around one specific project: a free WordPress plugin I built for a charity that ended up reshaping my own consulting career more than any paid client work had.
