Dwell Time

Dwell Time is a critical SEO metric that measures the actual length of time a user spends on a webpage after clicking through from a search result, before returning to the search engine. While Google doesn't officially list it as a direct ranking factor, its algorithmic systems (like RankBrain) use it as a massive "Satisfaction Signal." If a user stays on your site for five minutes, they likely found the answer they were looking for. If they leave in five seconds, it’s a red flag that your page failed to meet their intent.

Improving dwell time is the key to escaping the "Invisible Business" penalty. For Niagara local businesses, high dwell time tells Google that you are an authority in your niche. We increase this metric by optimizing the "Search Experience" (SXO)—using clear headings, engaging visuals, and embedding relevant videos. By answering the user's question so thoroughly that they don't need to look elsewhere, you build the trust required to keep them on your site and guide them toward a conversion.

Technically, high dwell time also reduces your "Bounce Rate" and minimizes "Pogo-Sticking" (where users bounce between results). These are all indicators that your digital architecture is working effectively. In 2025, search engines are less interested in how many keywords you use and more interested in how long you can hold a human's attention. Dwell time is the ultimate proof that your content is valuable, relevant, and built by a real expert who cares about the user's journey.
