What is a domain name?

Most websites have a domain name, it’s the address you type into a web browser to reach a web site, for example the domain name of this web site is thisismyurl.com. You’ll notice that domain names have two parts, the first is a customized name (thisismyurl) and the second is an extension such as .com, .net, .org or .ca

Domain names are used to help make your web site easier to find by visitors and can be anything you like, if you can get the name.

a domain name is simple a user friendly way of translating the location of your hosted web site for the general public, much as a street address tells customers where you are located without having to make them know your latitude and longitude.
