One of the problems of being a Mac user is that we generally just assume things work, which of course comes in handy most of the time. We forget how complicated computers really are, which means when they don’t work automatically, it freaks us out.
The new Apple App Store is a case in point. I’ve asked a few friends what they think of it and most have no idea where to find it. Apple’s spent a fortune marketing it, but they forgot that they’ve programmed us to expect it to work perfectly.
So where is it? It’s not in iTunes (trust me I looked for more time than I’d like to admit), it’s not even in Safari (why it would be I don’t know but it’s not). So, where is it? It’s in your toolbar just like the photo above. The problem is, you have to do a software update to actually install it.
For the record, the website at http://www.apple.com/mac/app-store/ clearly states that fact, but . . .
- I’m a guy
- I’m a Mac user
I’ll be honest, the thought of reading the manual was the furthest thing on my mind when I was looking to run the new store.
BTW, this is a rare glimpse in to the secret world of a web master. The toolbar above is my everyday work Mac, so what do I consider important enough to have in my tray?
- My Desktop
- App Store
- Mail for my email
- Safari for testing and surfing
- Firefox for testing and surfing
- Adobe Dreamweaver as a rapid code environment
- Adobe Illustrator for creating artwork
- Adobe Fireworks for chopping up artwork
- iTunes . . . for my tunes
- TextEdit for raw HTML editing
- Skype, a phone and video client
- Adium to chat online with clients and co-workers
- iCal so I never miss a meeting
- Billings to track client expenses and invoice for time
- svnX for sending files to SVN servers
- Cyberduck for FTPing to servers and CDN’s
- MAMP for running websites locally
- [eo], a man needs his toys (even if that’s a Caldari Navy Raven)
- Yammer for talking to the team
- GasMask for easy .host file edits
- MoneyDance for keeping track of home expenses

K, I actually followed the directions in the first place and every time I click on “software update” the dialog box pops up and says “nothing to update” and there is no icon in the toolbar. ??? I have looked in Finder, Applications, etc… it’s not anywhere! Any thoughts?
Andee, take a look under the Apple menu in the top left corner.
Andee, did you find it? I am having the same problem. Chris, I looked in apple menu but that did not help me locate the problem. Any thoughts?
