Tag Clouds vs. Category Lists

When it comes to blogging, there are some simple things that website owners should pay attention to in order to make a huge difference in their website traffic. One of those things is the tag cloud.

Each time you add a new post to your WordPress website, you’re asked to include tags. These are keywords for the article and some plugins, such as WP Auto Tagger (which I reviewed in my post 10 AWESOME WORDPRESS PLUGINS FOR WEBSITE MARKETING), will generate the tags for you without forcing you to create new ones.

The tags are literally keywords, used to build an index on your website. It’s similar method to a book index. The Tag Cloud is literally that, an index of the most popular tags (keywords) you’ve used on your website, displayed in a way which makes the most common tags appear larger than the others.

What is a Category List?

By contrast, a Category List is an organized structure, similar to a traditional Table of Contents.

The Category List is used to define post areas, subsections of your website and commonly used shortcuts so that readers who are looking for specific content can use a hierarchical search engine structure.
